Brothers and Sisters,
Local 537 extends our congratulations to former Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, our new U.S. Secretary of Labor. Marty has been a longtime friend and ally to Local 537 and all the union building trades. We know he will be an outstanding labor secretary.
A second-generation union Laborer, Marty knows the power of working people standing together for a better life. As Mayor, Marty Walsh stood up for all workers, including low-income workers and workers of color. During his tenure as mayor, 135,000 new jobs were created. He has worked tirelessly as mayor and throughout his career to rebuild the middle class and build a more inclusive and resilient economy, including by supporting the fight for a $15 minimum wage.
Mayor Walsh has stood by Local 537 for years, representing our interests in City Hall and supporting Boston’s robust construction industry. He was by our side in 2019 at the pipecutting ceremony for our state-of-the-art Union Hall. While we’ll miss running into Marty in Dorchester and at union events, we couldn’t be more proud to send him off to Washington, D.C.
President Joe Biden has promised to be the “strongest labor president” in American history, and Secretary Walsh will be there with him, fighting for working families.
Please join us in congratulating Secretary Walsh.
In Solidarity,
Tom Kerr
Business Manager/Financial Secretary-Treasurer
